NASEO Study Tour and Workshop on Carbon Capture, Sequestration, Utilization and Emerging Clean Coal Technologies

June 13-14, 2018
Houston-Galveston Area Council
Houston, TX

NASEO, with support from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy, hosted an educational workshop on Carbon Capture, Sequestration, Utilization and Clean Coal Technologies for state energy officials on June 13-14, 2018 in Houston, Texas. The two-day workshop educated and informed state energy officials about the latest clean coal and carbon capture, utilization, and sequestration (CCUS) technologies, as well as emerging technologies that would allow for the domestic production of rare earth elements.  The workshop included a study tour of NET Power's Allam Cycle demonstration facility and the Petra Nova CCS plant.  one of the worlds most advanced and successful CCUS sites – the Petra Nova facility.  Workshop participants also learned about policies and programs at the state and federal levels which support these technologies and explored domestic opportunities for extraction of rare earth elements from coal and coal by-products which are vital to the development and manufacturing of modern technologies (e.g., electric vehicles, smartphones, solar batteries, fiber optics, etc.).
