NASEO, NARUC, and LBNL Distribution System Planning and Resilience Training (States and Territories Only)

NASEO, the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC), and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) invite State Energy Offices, public utility commissions, governors’ energy advisors, and utility consumer advocates to participate in one of three trainings on distribution system planning and resilience in the fall and winter 2023-2024. The content of the three regional trainings will be identical and state participants are welcome to attend any one of the following trainings:

  • November 29-30, Washington, D.C. (registration closed)
  • January 24-25, 2024, Orange County, CA (Registration now open)
  • March 2024: week of March 18, Nashville, TN (Registration coming soon)

The training includes 101-level sessions as well as more in-depth technical sessions, interactive activities, and peer-sharing opportunities. Topics include the following:

Day 1 - Integrated Distribution System Planning (IDSP)

  • Understanding planning objectives, roles and responsibilities, and process
  • Developing load forecasting — tools, methods, and scenarios, including electrification and extreme weather impacts
  • Planning for distributed energy resources
  • Identifying grid needs and analyzing investment options
  • Reviewing utility distribution plan filings
  • Allocating costs for upgrades to enable electrification and solar PV hosting capacity

Day 2 - Resilience Planning

  • Examining example resilience plans and template
  • Identifying threats, predicting vulnerabilities, and assessing risk
  • Developing mitigation and rapid restoration strategies
  • Reviewing strategies for valuing and prioritizing investments
  • Identifying criteria for evaluating resilience projects

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Electricity, Building Technologies Office, and Grid Deployment Office are supporting this training. Limited travel stipends will be available upon request.
