Please join us for a panel discussion on the growing crisis in Venezuela and risks to natural resources. Our speakers Robert Kahn, economic consultant and adjunct professor at American University, and Luisa Palacios, Head of Latin America at Medley Global Advisors LLC, will explore the recent political and economic developments in Venezuela, the implications for oil supply as well as other supply risks ahead.

SPEAKERS 

Robert Kahn

Dr. Robert Kahn is economic consultant and adjunct professor at American University as well as John Hopkins University. Prior to this, he was Steven A. Tananbaum Senior Fellow for International Economics at the Council on Foreign Relations. He was also a senior strategist with Moore Capital Management, a senior adviser in the financial policy department at the World Bank, and held senior staff positions at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Citigroup, the U.S. Treasury, the Council of Economic Advisers, and the Federal Reserve. His areas of expertise include international economic policy, debt restructuring and debt policy, and financial markets. Dr. Kahn holds a Ph.D. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a B.A. from University of Chicago.

Luisa Palacios

Dr. Luisa Palacios is the Head of Latin America at Medley Global Advisors LLC. She served as Latin America Analyst of the Emerging Markets Team at the firm since June 2005. Dr. Palacios has many years of emerging markets economic and political research experience. Most recently, she served as a Macro Strategist of Andean Region at Barclays Capital, with share coverage of Argentina. Dr. Palacios served as a Senior Economist of Latin America at the Japan Bank for International Cooperation, where she wrote on Latin economic and financial issues and monitored the Latin financial markets, debt issues and trade flows. Prior to that, she was responsible for sovereign risk evaluation of Latin American countries at Societe General in Paris and New York, as well as she served as consultant under the Chief Economist of Latin America at the World Bank. Dr. Palacios has published papers in international journals on economic policy and debt issues in Latin America and on regional energy policy issues. She is an Adjunct Professor at the center for Energy Studies at IESA’s MBA School in Caracas, Venezuela. Dr. Palacios holds a Ph.D. from the School of Advanced International Studies at John Hopkins University, a Master's degree from the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University and a Bachelor's degree from the Universidad Catolica Andres Bello in Caracas, Venezuela.

MODERATOR

Carolyn Kissane

Carolyn Kissane is Secretary, Energy Forum Advisory Board and serves as the Academic Director of the graduate program in Global Affairs at the Center for Global Affairs. She is Professor at NYU where she teaches graduate level courses examining the geopolitics of energy, comparative energy politics, energy, environment and resource security, a regional course focusing on Central Asia.

Dr. Kissane is Coordinator of the Energy and Environment concentration at the Center and is faculty adviser to the Energy Policy International Club. She was awarded the esteemed NYU Excellence in Teaching Award in 2007, the SCPS Award for Teaching Excellence in 2009, and nominated for the NYU-wide Distinguished Teaching Award in 2008, 2009 and 2016.

She was named Breaking Energy's Top Ten New York Women in Energy and Top Ten Energy Communicator. She hosts Fueling our Future, an energy series she moderates which brings in energy and environment experts for conversation and debate. She also serves on the boards of the New York Energy Week, and the Clean Start Advisory Board. Dr. Kissane received her Ph.D. from Columbia University.
