The risk of wildfires, once largely a concern primarily for the Western U.S., is an emerging national issue. The National Association of State Energy Officials (NASEO) and the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC), with support from the U.S. Department of Energy, are organizing a cohort to help states address emerging wildfire threats to critical energy infrastructure and navigate the evolving challenges this creates for State Energy Offices and Public Utility Commissions.?
Building on?NARUC's Wildfire Workbook?and?NASEO's Wildfire Forum Webinar Series, the cohort will feature expert presentations and action-oriented discussions among states to put the lessons learned into practice. The cohort includes four 90-minute topic-driven virtual sessions.?
The third Wildfire Resilience Cohort session will be held on June 24, 2026, from 12:30–2:00 p.m. ET. This session will examine the operational and regulatory dimensions of Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS), including the decision-making and risk assessment frameworks that govern utilities’ de-energization decisions and what those protocols mean for states’ situational awareness. The session will also explore wind-related mitigation strategies and grid modernization technologies as risk reduction tools, and how states can support these resilience investments to prevent needing to issue PSPSs in the first place.
